Recorded at the Milwaukee SummerFest on July 1, 1991, the bootleg The Replacements Stink but They're Fun to Listen to...Live documents one of their final shows, making it a valuable historical document for fans even if the overall package is a bit on the dicey side. A crowd tape heavy on audience noise, the sound is tinny -- Tommy Stinson's bass is sometimes inaudible -- and the sleeve contains no song listing of any kind. (Even the A- and B-sides of this vinyl-only release aren't clearly delineated.) Still, for a band on the edge of collapse, The Replacements sound energetic and even focused, mocking the festival environment and taunting the crowd (Paul Westerberg introduces a cover of "Another Girl, Another Planet" by announcing "Here's a song by a band that most of you've never heard of, the Only Ones"); of course, their blessing and curse was that they were always at their best when they had nothing to lose.
